Subject: This was a starting point for a friend who joined the church...

When my dh was in the military, he met a wonderful black man who asked him what the church felt about military service. After my dh explained it to him, he asked to go to church with us. I was quite worried about it, because those were the days when blacks were staging protests at BYU games, and I wondered that he might want to stir up trouble over the blacks and the priesthood issue. I was wrong. He was baptized and was a great memeber. The day I heard that blacks could hold the priesthood, I turned to my husband and said, "Now Malcolm can get married!" He had not wanted to get married until he could have the priesthood in his home. So it was cool. He had always been convinced that he would have the priesthood soon. I don't think it was a year and a half after he was baptized until he recieved the priesthood.

Anyway, I'm digressing. Malcolm had actually joined the church because of the church's support for the military.

I think being in the military can be a very noble career. The motive is the difference between it being a noble career or just coasting downhill. My hubby was in the military for 14 years, and you definately see all types and all motives.

I think the war in Iraq stinks. I am not behind it at all. I think it is an evil war. When I hear that the soldiers are off fighting for "our freedom" it makes me want to puke. The issue had nothing to do with our freedom, and everything to do with our greed and interference on the world stage. But the soldier who was enlisted has the same legal responsibility as if it truly were a war against America. They have a moral responsibility to fulfill their contracts. (under certain circumstances). It is the leaders who are accountable for this ungodly mess.

One of my tenants came in a few weeks back and ended up talking about Vietnam. This man still suffers from post tramatic stress syndrome. He ends up in the VA psych ward a few times a year. He told about how they would enter a village and if anyone in the village had a weapon, they would kill every man, woman, and child in the village, including infants.

No wonder he has post tramatic stress syndrome. The things he talked about are to evil to comprehend, and no soldier under ANY contract, has a responsibility to do those things.

Would be that we had more men/women of true integrity and motive in the military. Not that we have few, but wouldn't it be great to know that NO soldier serving in the US military would commit evil acts under the guise of responsibility.
