Subject: The "blurry line" . . .
In reply to: Chuck in ND 's message, "Interesting" on 10:07:40 01/26/06 Thu

I'm not ready to take sides on this one.

In reference to the blurry line, it is clear, at least to me, that there are cases where abortion might be justified. Otherwise, why would there be instructions to the Church leaders regarding such choices? As far as it has been revealed, abortion is not murder, but probably "like unto it". I'm not trying to cheapen the argument by saying this, because I'm as appalled at abortion as anyone.

I can't argue one point that he makes. I don't believe that there is any middle ground. I don't believe that there is the possibility of litigation because there is too much corruption in the industry. Someone can always find or pay a doctor to testify that the mother's life or well being is in danger, or the same for the baby. All it will take is one and the floodgates would be opened. Then you have pure chaos. I think this has to be an all or none law with exceptions being extremely, and I mean EXTREMELY difficult.

I'm not sure I believe that there are no cases where childbirth would not kill the mother. Please enlighten me on this one. You're the first I've ever heard make this claim. I'm definitely interested in that.

Here's where I'm at on this. My political side says that the Libertarians are right. My moral side says that it's just plain wrong to allow wholesale abortions and that by doing nothing, we might be bringing the wrath and judment of God upon ourselves. The second weighs more heavily.

I'm still on the fence, leaning slighty towards your side, but I appreciate your reply (and everyone's).

One thought that I do have is that in order to control the problem, there could be laws that prohibit harvesting of aborted baby tissue, thereby taking the greed out of it. Perhaps there could be other similar laws that would not make abortion, per se, illegal, but that would make it much less appealing.

And then I'm still not sure that it wouldn't be a bad idea to just let the states decide on it, regardless of what the federal government does or doesn't do.
