The kid was being a kid. Undoubtedly his father talks to him and that is good. His father should take a further step and teach him about other's rights to privacy and what is his business and what is not.

Actually the biggest mistake was made by the school. First they should have handled it by immediately stepping up and saying, "Don't answer that question." and then telling the students that such information is very private and not the kind of thing to be shared in an open forum like that. Then they should have called for the next question, and that would be that. Situation over.

Stupid to punish someone for being insensitive.
