John, I'd like you to go out and watch the movie "Shipping News". I want you to really pay attention to it. Then let me know what you think about it.

Jeff, I'll rent it next time I go for some videos. It got bad reviews and I don't know anyone who has seen it until you mentioned it. Now it's on my list.

I just saw The Road Home and loved it. It's a recent award winning film from China. The story is told by a man that returns from the big city to his small village because his father just died. His mother wants the body carried back to the village since the father died in a hospital in a neighboring city. The old tradition, rarely followed anymore, is for the body to be carried home with the entourage shouting out to the spirit "this is the way home" so he is not lost. The mother's demands for this task at first seem unreasonable and childishly superstitious. Then we are shown the story of their courtship and marriage and after this revealation the viewer is left with the feeling that her request must be honoured. The young woman is played by the beautiful Zhang Ziyi, from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. This film had me crying like a baby by the end. It's such an incredibly beautiful story of love and devotion. I'll probably buy the DVD.

Tonight I'm about to watch Life Is Beautiful. Yes, I have to catch up on some films I've missed over the years.

I really enjoy watching movies that had a real impact on you guys. To me, its like taking a peek through a window of your hearts. Example: I never would have rented Gods & Monsters, til John mentioned the impact it had on him. I will make sure I rent The Road Home. I feel a little better from this last weekend. I had the kids. The Iron Maiden was in top form with threats, inquisitions, and demands. She threatened to not let me have the kids on Sunday. I had to sit in the car Sunday morning while she came out, massive hands or hips, hearing the gears and motors buzzing and clicking as her Iron form lumbered towards me for more speeches and sarcasms. It took all my strength to sit there and let her have her moment, in the front yard, for all the neighbor to witness her tight grip of control like a steel vise. Eventually she informed her Dark Harpies to let the children go free. (I did notice new sores on her ankles and a bandage on her left foot. I see her disorder upon her remaining human form continues to plague her. If I need to, I'll address this in court for all to see.) That horrible whore-bitch ought to be thrown into a steel foundry!

I spent Sat. night with Anne, the amazon woman. I finally got to hang out at her house. It used to be a duplex, converted to a single family home. Its a big house! She joked about me taking the kids and moving with her and her two children. They are younger, 4&2. She also has a boy and a girl. I joked back, sure...as soon as Kim gets hit by a runaway bus. Then we'll see. I'll let you guys updated on the luncheon with the radio people today.

Well, tonight was 2 for 1 at my favorite video store and I paid the extra $1 for the "new release" of Shipping News. I just finished watching it a few minutes ago and I'm asking myself why Jeff wanted me to watch this. I'm afraid this film did not speak to me at all. I'll just leave it at that. I was about to write up a review, but I will refrain out of respect for Jeff.

A follow up on Life Is Beautiful. I can see how this film got a lot of attention and a warm reception. It's a challenging subject for wacky Italian funnyman Roberto Benigni, but pulled off with wit and grace.

The story sets up with the meeting and courtship of Benigni's character with a local beauty after he moves to his uncle's village. The setting is Italy during Mussolini's reign. After they marry and have a young son the Nazis begin the roundup of Italian Jews. When he and his uncle and son are taken away, his wife insists on going with them. They end up in a Nazi prison labor camp. In a grim moment in history, Benigni is able to craft a funny and moving portrait of a gifted comic doing his best to keep his wife's spirit alive and shield his son from their brutal reality.

A very good film, but certainly not a work of art. Much of it is quite unbelieveable, but because it doesn't attempt to preach nor take itself too seriously it works. Not one to make my list of favorite films and I certainly don't feel the need to ever watch this again, but I would recommend it for those curious as to how a tale in this setting can go against conventional storytelling.

John, What I got out of Shipping News were several 'messages'. A man living life numb. A man who remembers as a little boy the pain and the betrayal he received from his father and how HE IS STILL THAT WOUNDED BOY INSIDE. My goodness, the way he told that scank whore who seduced him that he loved her. He sounded like a frail little boy when he said it. A man who is unable to stand for himself and continue to always react to life especially the crises. Seeing a man trying to survive with the only ray of hope is his love for his child.

The movie really spoke to me. I guess it was the character striving to find an answer or trying to find his place in life that I thought of myself and you John. The ending had a definite impact on me.
How a man sees the pattern of his own family and at first believing his path would be the same, but realizing that he can make a choice and he does....towards healing his soul.

Its ok that you didn't get the same impact. I guess I was just on a different 'plane' while watching. It 'spoke' to me...a movie I will definitely purchase and place as a personal favorite. Oh, John...thanks for not revealing your critique out of respect. If anyone else has a chance to view this film I'd like to hear if they liked it or not. I might not be ready to hear WHY one wouldn't but a quick yes or no would be nice.
