Okey Dokey, I am back online. Readers' Digest version: I had a bad W98 installation ever since that virus required me to wipe and start anew. Things were steadily going down hill. Borrowed a copy of W98 from a friend at work, and my CD-ROM crashed with 20 minutes left to go. Bought a new CD-ROM and (amazingly) the Windows reinstallation *picked up where it left off* and reinstalled flawlessly. There are still some minor quirks (it's still Windows, after all) but I am back in the saddle again. Woo hoo!
