Subject: YES, absolutely

I just got back from the Yes concert. My last friend in Tucson, Tony, was kind enough to give me a ticket. We both went to see the Yes Union concert back around 1990. It was good to get out of the apartment and spend some time with a friend.

The show was wonderful. The people in the audience were not. I have never in my life witnessed such rude, selfish, mindless, and pathetic behavior during a performance. We had to get up and change seats 3 times to get away from entire groups of people that talked continuously throughout the songs. I'm not exagerating. 3 different people in different areas talked without pausing for a breath. The concert was quite loud, so they basically shouted their conversations and gossip to be heard above that annoying music. These people didn't even talk about the show, or Yes. They talked about work, shopping, etc. I know, because I could hear them from several seats away.

Then there was the continual flood of people walking in and out of the venue. I would say that at least 40% of the audience felt the need to get up and walk around to the snackbar, beer vendors and restrooms every 20 minutes or so. The foot traffic was ridiculously unending. Why did these people feel the need to spend $$$ to go to a concert they barely paid attention to? The people seated directly around us each got up 3-4 times. Does anyone on this planet have an attention span longer than 10 minutes anymore? The show started at 8pm instead of the scheduled 7:30 because 50% of the damn audience couldn't get their sorry asses away from the vendors and sit down. I have to tell you that I am losing faith in humanity, especially my fellow Americans.

It was a real challenge to tune out the neanderthals and enjoy the show, but despite these fools Yes gave us a fine show. The line up was Jon Anderson, Chris Squire, Steve Howe, Alan White and Rick Wakeman. This was much, much better than the Union tour. They played only 2 new songs. All of the rest were classics, some I never would have guessed they would play. The selection was beautiful. They opened with Siberian Khatru. Also featured were Awaken, Don't Kill The Whale, Heart of the Sunrise, South Side of the Sky, Yours Is No Disgrace, parts of Tales From Topographic Oceans, and the obligatory stuff like Roundabout. A 3 hour show with a 20 min. interlude. Steve did some incredible solo acoustic guitar work. Rick threw in a little Six Wives of Henry VIII in his solo medly. Chris and Alan did a great bass & drum medly of the Fish and Tempus Fugit. There were cameras present, so I expect a video from this tour to be released soon. If you missed this tour, you should see it.

>Great to hear John. Now that you have given us the data about the concert, how did you feel during the concert? Which songs felt good to hear? Which one seem to soothe the wounds you've been carring around? I'd like to hear an emotional perspective of the concert and seeing MY FAVORITE BAND IN ALL THE WORLD!!!!
I got a date with a new woman I met a week ago...Annie. She sent me a pic of her BEFORE she had kids.....so she has gained some wait...she has a slight Angelie Jolie look about her, especially the big full natural lips. I'll tasting those bad boys by 7:00PM tomorrow. The woman has lived a sexually repressed life and is in need of some serious sexual therapy and seeing that she can have some incredible orgasms with a passionate man, not the ass-clowns she is used to in her life.
JM Nerone/Mr.X continues another adventure of lust and desire. Damn, I am so awesome! Just 42 days til D-Day!!!!
I got to see my kids last night ALONE for the first time and I'll have them this weekend. (God is good!)
I need to get some statistical information about the buying power of men 35-55. I want to add these stats to my promo packet I am creating for Man-Talk.
I also had lunch with a very attractive young photographer. MEOW!! We agreed to work together on creating promo head shots of...MY HEAD.... actually I am thinking of pics of me, dressed in black, holding some type of compass device, looking into the camera. Or maybe a pic of my eyes....and sell it as Man-Talk being more mysterious and enigmatic and indepth, rather then sports watchin, nature lovin neandrathals. She is also interested in being my main photographer for Inner Compass. I am also including in my corporate portfolio..the men's magazine. IM (Inner Man)
Now, watch....I'll step outside and get hit by lightning and all is lost.
The things I have to do to get laid by beautiful women!!!!
shucks.

How did I feel during the concert? Mainly frustrated during the first third of the show as the dreggs of humanity kept talking over the music and standing up in front of me to purchase more beer from the roving vendors. When we finally found a relatively reasonable refuge I was able to get into the music more.

I really can't stress enough how terribly distracting the audience was during the entire show. I've never experienced something like that before. It was disturbing. I believe that given the chance to just focus on the music and the performance I would have ridden an emotional rollercoaster as the old familiar favorite songs flowed on. As it turned out, I was wrenched from my appreciation every 5 or 6 seconds by the rabble around me.

I can't say the music soothed me. The concert was loud, as most are and in the outdoor Desert Sky/Cricket Pavilion there really aren't any proper acoustics. They just set up walls of amps and flood the audience with sound. That strips a lot of the subtlety from the music.

Of course, songs like Heart of the Sunrise and Awaken still move me deeply. Much of their music works so powerfully on a deep emotional level. You know that. Jeff, have you ever seen YES live???

I was also grateful that they didn't just recreate the old recordings. They improvised a bit and expanded on some songs. That made the performance special for me. That kind of touch makes the concert experience a personal event.

I've been thinking a lot about how were're getting older. Seeing these guys gave me mixed feelings on the subject. Steve looked like an old balding professor. Chris is heavy and his face is deeply lined, but at the end of the show he brought out his little boy for the final bow. Jon looks the best, but he dyes his hair blonde and his voice doesn't have the same strength it once did. He had some trouble hitting a few notes. Rick is holding up well, but still insists on wearing the long coat, even at an outdoor concert in Phoenix in August! :-0 Alan looks old, but is still an awesome drummer. Here were a bunch of old men. You could see it for yourself. But here were a group of artists who could still make magic. They were still vital, despite the years of erosion. That was a positive thing. I had to think of the years slipping by us, but these guys still inspired me in the face of it all.

Now THAT was some fine sharing, Thanks John. I can imagine all those men were full of MAGICIAN energy, weaving music around them for all to see. Just like Gandalf or Merlin or others, age brings on wisdom and knowledge and that can manifest into confidence and courage. Like all good magicians, there comes a time to step away from being the apprentice and start weaving your own magic.
Go out there and make things happen! Weave your own magic for all to see. Effect lives, change perspectives!
Yes, John I have seen YES live. I went with Dave one time. We shared an awesome joint and got there and had a great time!
I have also seen Jon Anderson back in 81 when he toured alone with the release of his ANIMATION album.
THAT WAS GREAT!
I really enjoy their LADDER album...I wasn't too please with TALK, but LADDER brought back the old magic along with some new energy with the two new members.
