Unfortunatly other persons who have bounced checks have spoiled it for honest consumers. I guess retailers are losing much more in fraud and bounced checks than a $400.00 sale. It sucks I know. It's like having to pre-pay for your gas, even in the daytime, if you decide to use the gas pump the farthest away from the cashier. Too many bad apples have spoiled things for people that work hard to PAY for their purchases, keep a balance in their checking accounts, and try not to overcharge their credit cards.
