Staph infections are not uncommon in the hairless cresteds. This can be caused by anything from flea/chigger/mosquito bites. to underlying skin issues. It is relatively easy to treat. Generally, vet's will put them on a 7-10 day course of Simplicef, if the staph returns once the 1st round has been completed, they generally will do a 4-5 week course. Staph can be difficult to get rid of and the only way to get a true diagnosis is by doing a skin scrape or examining the contents of a pustule. Many times a yeast infection can be diagnosed as a staph without doing a skin scrape.

Simplicef is a relatively inexpensive antibiotic and is only given once daily.
