In reply to: H. Noland 's message, "flopy drive" on 00:11:15 10/19/99 Tue

I had just one partition, and the suspend to disk partition. The only reason I reformatted the hard drive was to make sure that there wasn't any old information on the drive when I reinstalled Windows. Incidentally, I was really paranoid that if the floppy was not working, I would have a huge hassle reloading windows 98, as you have to use the setup floppy to get things going.

It turns out that I did have a problem loading windows, but I don't think this was because of any concern about the floppy (Recall both the old and new had the problem of hanging right after a write). The load routine went fine, and then when it came time to format the hard drive,
(in WINDOWS 98) it kept asking me to put in the Windows 98 CD in the C: drive or the CD--and it was already in (the D: Drive). I opened and closed the door several times, and tried several different things. Eventually, I used an emergency boot disk that had FORMAT on it to FORMAT the hard drive, and then ran the WINDOWS installer--this worked great. I am suspicious that my Windows 98 setup disk might be bad (I had never used it, but I noticed that it wasn't write locked). Anyway, the whole idea was to make sure that the new Windows installation was clean and not just over-writing previous files. It sounds like you have done this with the partition for windows.

I did learn it was a good idea to have an "emergency" disk around with FDISK and FORMAT in case the install procedure didn't work.

I am not an expert, particularly with DOS. I would imagine that some driver was corrupted, although I ran the check system files, etc. and could find nothing wrong. I use the floppy to write disks that go to my keyboard, or I probably wouldn't have discovered this and don't know how long it was the case.

I had also check that the floppy had the same "hang" problem BOTH with the external cable and when I inserted it into the laptop, to make sure that it wasn't due to some problems with bad connections, etc.

I hope it works, as I know these things are frustrating!
