Jeffrey,

This is IBM's site for tips to get the most out of your battery (Dated: 11-2-99):

http://www.pc.ibm.com/qtechinfo/PFAN-3QNQJN.html

The following is copied for this site:

NOTE: If you mainly use your ThinkPad as a desktop replacement, your
battery will have a constant charge of 100%. This will negatively affect
the performance of your battery. It would be better to use battery
power or to remove the battery from your system while using mains power.

Battery Conditioning
In general, rechargeable batteries store electrical energy through chemical
reaction -- therefore, capacity will change by temperature, unused storage
period, load condition, and number of cycles used.

[snip]

It is recommended that you deep-discharge your battery every few
months for optimum performance. Deep-discharge occurs when your
ThinkPad is used on battery power until the charge is at 0% (the
system will automatically go into hibernation). At this point, attach
the AC adapter and charge to 100%.

Hope this helps ... John
