Subject: DVD-ROM not reading CDs

I haven't been having any video problems with the DVD-ROM in my Vivante SE, but I have experienced something odd. CD-ROM discs and CD audio discs aren't being read by the drive. But DVDs work just fine. It's possible it's because of some odd software conflict -- although I don't install much new software. Or any, since I lost the CD-ROM capability, none at all except shareware.

Any suggestions on how I should troubleshoot? I can't uninstall too many programs because until it's fixed I won't be able to add the programs again. And I can't grab a DVD-ROM driver off the CD because, well you get the picture.

If it's possible, I'd rather not have to send my laptop to ASE. Perhaps I should just buy a new CD-ROM?
