I pulled my DVD out of my Vivante XL and it is made by Panasonic. I looked on Panasonic's web site and they do not have any info on this model but they do have a 1-800 number to call. There they told me that Win 9x and NT do not need drivers for the DVD drive and that they could not do anything with the drive but to contact www.acscompro.com and they are the developers of the firmware and drivers. After going to this company's sight I found a number to call and got a recording and left my name and number, I haven't heard back from this company but will let ya'll know when I do. Panasonic also gave me a number to Express Technical (1-800-767-9281) and they will provide warranty coverage on the drives for up to 15 months after the date of manufacture. (My DVD drive was made the same month that I purchased the laptop from Transmonde, Feb. 99). Hope that this info will help somebody.
