Subject: Flickering on Vivante SE

From time to time I have noticed on this board some complaints about LCD screens flickering on Vivante SEs. Mine just recently started to do this and I was very concerned that I'd have to send it to ASE for warranty service (with my warranty having only slightly more than a month to run). However, I seem to have fixed my problem. I want to emphasize two things. First it seems to have been the problem with my machine, others may well have different problems. Second, I seem to have fixed the problem. For all I know, it will be back tommorrow. With those disclaimers, here is what I did.

I noticed that the flickering was much more pronounced after tilting the screen or adjusting the contrast control. In order to make sure I could replicate the phenomenon for the ASE technicians, I started tilting the screen back and forth extensively and adjusting the contrast control up and down extensively. For a while it triggered the flickering problem then, to my amazement, the problem stopped. I'm wondering whether the flickering problem was caused by gummed up or stuck contrast controls and more seriously by a gummed up or sticking switch which shuts off the display when it is put in the closed position. In any event that was my experience. Hope the fix lasts and this helps someone out there.

Thanks,
Harry S. Gerla
