Subject: Training ships

I've read someplace that the first training ship for boys was the HMS Implacable in 1855 at Plymouth. Can anyone tell me what happened to boys before this time? did they get any training? Also at what age would a boy be sent to the navy? My ancestor was a ??boy 1st class in the navy, but at what time I do not know. He was born around 1785 in Plymouth & I am having great diffuculty getting any info about this time. Any help or suggestions very gratefully accepted. Thanks
