Hi John,
Visiting the site for the first time for months, I was pleased to see your message. Sounds like we were contemporaries in New Quay, although I'm sorry to say I don't remember your name and I don't expect you would recall mine. Whatever, I joined the school in the autumn of 1944, returned with it to London (Camberwell), then left for family reasons in the summer of 1945. Later served six years on deck in the MN (1949-55), came ashore in Melbourne (legally) and got into journalism. - I was also part of the old chemist's shop crew under 'Ted' Stead, he of the pathological thing about smoking. I have sometimes wondered how he got on with our chain-smoking headmaster, Dr Fuest, up the hill. Captain Harvey? I often think of him. I don't remember the name of the little Welsh maths teacher with the surgical boot, but I distinctly recall feeling it kick my stern once for my sheer stupidity. On the other hand, I used to get a Special Mention for English. Do you remember them dishing them out in the big (church?) hall, where we also had to take dancing lessons with the local lasses? The building on the pier was also where we had our chemistry lessons. And... I'd better stop. The databank between my ears is running at full revs. Happy days, indeed!
All the best to you, and to Tom
John
