I am not exactly what you would call an EARLY member of the Indie but I did join in 1942. Had I joined the previous year I would have been on the Mersey off Birkenhead. There were approximately 170 boys at Clawd Newydd in N.Wales when I was there. Even though we were on land we carried on as though we were on the ship. The Captain was Captain Bambra and the first officer was named Unwin. I liked Unwin even though on one occasion he gave me six of the best. My experience on the Indie was most positive and it has stood me well for many years. I know that when I joined the army it was like going to Butlins Holiday Camp. Not only that but I could eat the food and I got paid. I am now nearly 73 and remember my Indie days with affection.
