I'm sorry I haven't replied in all these years. I just re-discovered this site with my original question on it.

In 2001, I wrote to the Liverpool Record Office, Central Library, William Brown Street, Liverpool, L38EW and received a reply giving me the name of a book: A List of Liverpool Pilots 1734 to 1990 compiled by P J H Tebay (Liverpool Nautical Research Society, 1991) and a copy of a page out of it that listed my ancestor.

Hope this is helpful. Sorry for such a long delay.
