Subject: More on RPF
In reply to: lanie 's message, "What do you mean by RPF?" on 17:34:18 06/18/02 Tue

(first off, want to apologize to Lanie for going off in what looked like a reply to her -- darn board makes it difficult to figure out who I'm replying too)

I feel that banning RPF from being recommended on the list would be entirely counterproductive to the meaning behind the list.

It's BetterBuffyFics. It's a place where we recommend stories we think are good.

If we start saying "Well, it might be good, but it contains ___ and ___, so we can't recommend it on the list," then where does it end? Do we start saying "No, no, it has graphic torture" or "It has complete and utter fluff" or "It's a crossover", etc.?

Recommending a story on the list means that a person finds that story to be of excellent quality, a delight to read, and wants to share it with other people. The other people DO NOT have to read it.

And that's what it comes down to, doesn't it? If someone recommends a story, and you don't like it, you don't have to read it. It isn't posted to the list. It isn't put up on the archive. It's just a simple little link with a couple of warnings put beforehand. You don't have to click on it.

So it makes absolutely no sense to say that one type of fiction is "more acceptable" than another, because, again, just a link, just a click, and you don't have to do anything you don't want to.

Should the rec have warnings about it containing RPF? Of course. Much like how we include warnings about spoilers and ratings and whatnot.

But saying flat-out "You can not recommend these stories on this list" is just pathetic. It goes against the nature of the list, and if you do this, then everyone else with their own little foibiles will want to start banning things from being recommended on the list.

[descends into sarcasm]
Here, I'll start. If I can't post recs of RPF, then I don't want to have to see recs for Spike fic. Can that happen? Because Spike fic totally squicks me, and I think it's wrong, so, therefore, I shouldn't have to see your recs for it even though you obviously think it's okay.

I have to agree with Kate's fundamental point. The name of the group is BetterBuffyFics and the only criteria for reccing fics should be that the reccer considers them to be, y'know, worthy.
And I think the poll categories are skewy. 'Cause it's implying that fic that deals with sexual stuff is less worthy (using that word again but it's the only one I can think of.) If it's good writing, it's good writing.
There are plenty of things that are recced on the list that don't interest me at all - sometimes I'll take a chance and read 'em, sometimes I don't.
It's all about free thought - a wonderful concept!
