I was about 14 or so when it happened. It was my first experience with seeing the "good guys" (pro-democracy students) get smashed under the heel of an authortarian regime. I mean, you read about the Velvet Rev. in Czechoslovakia and all, but this was the first time I saw it as it happened. Granted, that was the same weekend the Ayatollah Khomeni died, so it wasn't a total wash, but still. I remember seeing all of those earnest non-cynical students paecefully (although crowded together) demonstrating, and the unveiling of the Goddess of Freedom statue, and then it all getting utterly destroyed.

Bitter? Moi??? whatever gave you that idea???
