Subject: I have really conflicting feelings about illegals.

EricnKeddi are farther to the left than I am on this one. We both agree that we should really start with punishing the people who hire them rather than the immigrants themselves. Of course, that would be Bush's buddies makin' money off of them, so I'm not holding my breath.

I do get annoyed when other SWs call me for help with their illegal clients. I get the feeling that I'm supposed to drop everything and hand out free meds and medical care to their kids. I usually regretfully say that we can't serve clients without social security numbers and that's that. (Of course, I never collect these numbers unless I absolutely have to. I also never give mine out unless I absolutely have to.)

But I have a long line of "Born in the USA" folks who are laborers, too. And in Texas there's no way they qualify for Medicaid. I confess they get the resources first.

I know that there's no way poor epileptics can get adequate care in Mexico. They also don't get it here.

But, J, that just means they have seizures and end up in the ER costing us thousands more than they would if they got a steady doctor and an adequate supply of meds to stabilize them. It's crazy. And in the case of chronic conditions like epilepsy, they go to the ER over and over again.

I don't know what the answer is. Right now we're killing kids in Iraq because their lives don't factor into the freeper Culture of Life. How is what I'm doing with my organization's resources any different? Do illegal lives not matter? Of course not. But I kick them to the curb all the same...
