My sentiments against Rush derive from his absolute hypocrisy. Here is a man who spent years using his narrow view of moral behavior to beat people bloody; moral beliefs are properly a shackle on one's conduct, but instead Rush's were a lash. And now when it's shown what a fraud he is, when he fails to measure up to his own cruel ethics, he wants compassion. Fuck him! He should suffer his own warped politics and go to prison for the next 25 or 30 years.
Myself, I'm far from anti-painkiller; in fact, I think the controls on them should be severely loosened. I'd also like to see opiates tried in psychiatric practice, as has been suggested; the problem with modern antidepressants is that they have major side-effects and no one knows what the long term health consequences of them might be. Serzone is known to cause liver damage; and Wellbutrin is suspected of the same. However, opiates have been with us for 150 years, and are not known to cause _any_ long-term health effects; and they don't come with all the sexual side effects that SSRIs and other medications do. The main reason they have not been used in psychiatric practice has nothing to do with their addictive properties; intead, it's because they can't be patented: drug companies have poured billions into the creating the latest generation of mediocre, half-effective antidepressants, and when they can sell them for $3 and $4 a pill, they stand to make shitloads. Selling morphine or codeine is nowhere near as lucrative; it's terribly cheap to make, and would sell for pennies.
