I understand perfectly how you and Eric feel, because a week ago I was subjected to similar treatment at a "pro-troop" rally which was, in fact, a right-wing love fest with no outsiders tolerated. Some self-proclaimed "patriot" snatched my sign out of my hands and tore it up before a few cheering individuals and all the cops on the scene could say is, "There aren't too many of us here today, so we can't guarantee your safety."

Fortunately, there are some sane people living in Tucson, but I wonder what that angry mob I encountered would group-think about their comments and suggestions:

Treasonable

The general public seems confused about certain aspects of war. Some think those who are against the war are against the troops fighting the war, when in fact these are two separate issues.

Others condemn those who speak out against the Bush administration.

To those who criticize Bush's war, let me happily quote President Theodore Roosevelt:

"To announce that there must be no criticism of the president - or that we are to stand by the president right or wrong - is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public."

An appropriate way to protest war and support our troops

Those of us who are against our presence in Iraq, but support all the men and women who are there under orders, are terribly torn. Protesting the war can easily be taken as being against our troops.

Like so many, I've worn a looped red, white and blue ribbon since 9/11.

To show my support for our fighting men and women, while still protesting the war, I've simply turned it upside down.

It's an internationally recognized sign of distress when the American flag is hung upside down. I believe we're in distress now.

I suggest this as an appropriate way to protest, while supporting the men and women who have no choice but to follow orders.

We want them home, but they also need to know we are behind them completely.

Perhaps those who, like myself, have been hesitant to speak out for fear of being viewed as being against our soldiers can, very quietly, get our idea across.
