Subject: Betsy! Where Art Thou?

I read your post about your past life and I understood it completely. I too would risk my life to save beauty. Hitler ordered Paris destoyed as the Allies were approaching to end the Nazi occupation. The Nazi generals all refused to destroy the great architecture of Paris, especially the Eiffel Tower. They disobeyed at the risk of a court martial and firing squad.

There was little great art left in Paris at that time as Hitler himself had plundered the great art of Europe. In his 1000+ page book, "The Rise and Fall of The Third Reich"
William Shirer says of the Nazi plunder of Europe, and in particular the Louvre, "...some 137 freight cars loaded with 4,174 cases of art works comprising 21,903 objects, including 10,890 paintings, made the journey from the West to Germany up to July, 1944." (pp. 945-946)

The works of the Masters were included in the plunder, and the haul was valued in 1944 dollars as being worth over a billion German marks.

Of interest is the fact that many people on both sides of WWII hid many different types of treasures and important files and records. A major effort was undertaken by the Allies after the War to return all of the art to its rightful owners.

Scandals still exist 56 years after WWII. Swiss banks kept the money of Holocaust victims for themselves and made no effort to return it to the families of the survivors. Likewise, many European insurance companies destroyed records of life insurance policies so that they would not have to pay on them. The UN and the American government are pressuring the guilty parties to return monies with interest and pay on insurance policies.

You can't help but wonder how much suffering in today's world is payback for bad WWII karma. However, as you describe your situation -- and I have recall of my track and know of some of my past life situations -- it doesn't sound like you did anything terrible.

Is it a crime to save beauty from destruction? We just saw Islamic extremists destroy 800 year old Buddha's that had been carved into the mountains of Afghanistan. Would to God that somebody could have saved those relics.
