Subject: Episode of the Week Discussion. . .Inside
In reply to: ~ 's message, "season ten: The Four Percent Solution, December 17, 2004" on 15:16:18 04/28/05 Thu

Our EOTW this week is Season 10’s very unusual Christmas episode ”The Four Percent Solution.” The episode was Harm-lite, yet Harm’s presence was felt throughout the episode as Mac pours out her life and her emotions to the psychiatrist. Not much action/adventure in this episode, but lots of dramatic lines to discuss & of course, a shippery ending. Some comments/questions to help us get started:

1) Mac tells Dr. McCool: “It’s hard to have a conversation about my life without talking about him (Harm).” Do you agree? Why did she feel that way?
2) Dr. McCool asks Mac: “Why do you always choose to be alone?” Do you think that is true? Did she always choose to be alone?
3) I just don’t understand Mac’s cynicism at the start of this episode. Two months had passed between the flashback session with Dr. McCool and Mac’s auto accident. Since she seemed to be feeling better at the end of the session and seemed more positive about the overcoming her odds, why didn’t she pursue a relationship with Harm in those two months? Did she still believe he wasn’t interested? Why didn’t she pursue a relationship after this Christmas episode? It was obvious that he still cared about her.
4) Harm: “Mac, nothing's changed. I'm still here. Just enjoy the good news. Be happy. You're alive.” Mac: “You know what makes the news better. We both are.” What did Mac mean by these lines?
5) At the Fanfest Q&A, it was confirmed that the flashbacks in this episode were originally to be scenes in the Season 10 premiere, but TPTB felt these scenes weren’t action-oriented enough for a season premiere. Would you have preferred to have had these scenes in the premiere?
6) Early script drafts of this episode have the doctor telling Mac that her chances of conceiving a child have improved. If that dialogue had been included, how would it have affected the remainder of the season? Or would it? Do you think Mac’s infertility condition should have been reversed in this episode? Before the show ended?
