Date Posted: 10:55:06 06/17/02 Mon Lauren had recently adopted Natalie, a 4 y/o orphan. She was shy at first, but the two were beginning to bond. Natalie liked horses but had only ridden a little bit. Lauren had a suprise for the little girl. "Natalie, want to go to the barn? I want to show you something!" Lauren said cheerfully. "Yeah! Goody! I wanna see the horsies!" Natalie piped up, jumping up and down. Natalie and Lauren walked the short distance to the barn. They entered the main aisle, and at the first stall there was ribbons, and everyone yelled, "SUPRISE!" The members of FC jumped aside, revealing a stall with a small chestnut shetland pony in it. A brass stall plate read in big letters: SMOOTHIE Owned by Natalie Attwood. Natalie smiled and squealed, running all over. "B..bb..but it's not my birthday or a holiday!" she exclaimed. "I know, but now that you're part of our family we wanted for you to have a horse! You'll be spending a lot of time here!" Lauren said. Natalie beamed. "When can I ride her?" asked Natalie, eager. "I knew that was coming! Well, we could do a little ride today I suppose. But first, we need to go into the tackroom and find your new tack!" Lauren suggested. Samantha and Stephanie got Smoothie on the cross-ties while Natalie struggled to carry her small saddle. Lauren chuckled and took it for her, along with the bridle and grooming tote. "Do you know how to groom a horse?" asked Lauren. "Yeah! At the adoption place we used to go to stables once a week but we didn't get to ride much. Can I jump today plleeeasse?" begged Natalie. "Whoooaa...we haven't even tacked up the horse and you want to jump? I don't think you'll be jumping for a while Natalie!" Lauren answered. Once Smoothie was all tacked up, Lauren showed Natalie how to lead him out of the stable. Since Smoothie was small and good natured, Lauren knew Natalie would be safe with the mare. Natalie mounted Smoothie and took ahold of the reins. Lauren clipped the lunge line to Smoothies bridle. "I know how to walk and trot already!" Natalie chimed. "That's good! Today we don't have lot's of time, so let's take it easy, okay?" Lauren suggested. Natalie nodded. "Good. I'll be holding on to her the whole time. Just squeeze and ask for a walk," Lauren commanded. The little pony bounded into a walk. Natalie smiled. At the end of the lesson, they did a little trot. At first Natalie bounced around, but Lauren showed her how to post. Natalie was becoming a natural! At the end of the little lesson, Natalie was as happy as ever. Lauren showed her some more important horse saftey rules and then put Smoothie away.
