Date Posted: 10:56:18 06/17/02 Mon *she hurries to ride the pony, today she was going to take him cross country for the first time. she grooms him carefully and tacks him up. "Hurry up, Mom" she yells. "i'm coming" Saddle replies, tightening the girth on bailey's saddle so Michelle could come along. then she puts a bridle on the pony and clips a leadline to his bit. "ok, we're ready" she says, boosting Michelle into the saddle. Hannah leads Dun out of the barn, following Bailey and mounts. Dun shakes his head, eager to get going. Hannah walks him out to the course then trots and canters some circles in both directions to warm the pony up. "what jump first, mom?" she asks. Saddle points to a fence, prefect height for warming up. the girl and dun pony hop over the fence several times. "can i try a course?" she asks. "sure, Dun is going very nicely for you, just remember to keep your hands quiet and your heels down and if he gets too fast circle him until he slows down. start out with the jump you warmed up over, then take the flowers, then the coop and then go through the water jump, come back and take your warm-up fence in the other direction, ok?" Hannah nods and makes a circle at the canter then heads to the first jump. Dun hops over it and throws in a little buck of joy. Hannah laughs and heads him to the flowers and then the coop. he takes the coop like it was 5' high and Hannah loses a stirrup. he lands galloping and she brings him into a circle, regathers her stirrups and puts him back into a canter and heads to the water jump. just before the takeoff he quits and Hannah grabs a huge handful of mane to try save herself from falling off. then she gives him a tap with the crop to try to get him into the water and he half-rears, then runs in the other direction. Hannah circles him a few times to make him pay attention to her and then trys the water jump again. this time Dun gathers himself and jumps clear across the water, lands on the other side and canters quickly back to the warm-up fence, hops over it and allows Hannah to stop him. "what happened?" she asks. "i'll bet he hasn't even jumped water before" Saddle replies "lets take him to the stream and see if we can get him in the water there. they walk calmly to the stream and then try to get him he. he plants his feet and refuses to step into the water. Hannah gives him a tap with the crop and he gives another half-rear, spins and tries to take off in the other direction. she corrects him and gets him to put a foot in the water "good boy, Dun" Hannah praises then convinces him to step all the way into the water. he snorts suspiciously at the water but steps in. after a minute she allows him to walk out the other side and crosses again a few times until he is comfortable with it. "he's had enough for today" Saddle tells her after awhile. "ok" Hannah replies then nudges him into a walk and drops her stirrups for the ride back to the barn. she untacks Dun and bathes him, then blankets him and puts him in his stall for the night. he sighs tiredly and eats his grain, then lays down to sleep* [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
