Date Posted: 14:12:36 06/17/02 Mon It was a sunny morning and I was going to give Saddle's kids their lessons today! "Hey Michelle!" I greeted the tiny little kid. "Hey Jenny," she replied with a smile. "Ready to ride?" "YES!" The 2 y/o answered eagerly. We got Baily out and I helped her groom him & tack him up. The sturdy little Shetland stood patiently as she tried to put the bridle on. Then I grabbed the lunge line and we went to the outdoor arena, because it was nice & sunny. I gave Michelle a leg up and she settled into the saddle. "Remember the bucking strap?" Michelle nodded and to prove so grasped it firmly. First they walked in both directions. Michelle held the strap tightly and this caused her to sit deeper in the saddle. Then I made Michelle rise & fall at the walk, practicing posting. Then Baily picked up a trot around me. Michelle started posting, aided by my, "Up, down, up, down!" After that, I attatched the reins and said, "Ok, you don't need this anymore. Hold onto the reins." I showed her how to hold them and she did so. Then she walked & trotted (posting) Baily around me, holding the reins. Whenever she got unbalanced she would grab the bucking strap. After the successful lesson I let her ride around the ring twice by herself, trusting Baily. Then we went into the barn and she untacked the sweaty pony. I helped her groom him & then she fed him a carrot. We turned him out and she washed her hands & got a juicebox. Hannah walked into the barn with Saddle and when Michelle spotted her sister she ran over and exitedly told her about the lesson. "Well, I'm about to have my lesson," The 11 y/o grinned down at Michelle. "Let's go get Dun. Hey Miss Jenny," Hannah added. She got her Connermera pony out & groomed him, then tacked up for her jumping lesson. As she led the pony past Gamble's stall, she glanced over at me. "Didn't you say I could ride Lucky Gamble in a dressage lesson?" Her eyes shone hopefully. Everybody knew the impressive Thoroughbred was a champion dressage horse. "You'll work up to it," I said matter-of-factually. We went to the outdoor jumping arena. "I'm jumping 3-9"," Hannah said as she mounted. "Ok." I replied. "Warm up."
