Hannah rode Dun around the ring, warming the gelding up. I set the 10 jumps to 3'. The big, sandy arena was pretty, with the brightly painted jumps set up and the clean white fence railing. Hannah walked, trotted, and cantered around. I observed her form and noted her expert, calm confidence as she rode the 14.1 hand pony around the ring. "Ok, c'mere," I called and Hannah turned Dun towards me. The pony stopped obiedantly beside me as I pointed out the plan to Hannah. "First," I began, pointing, "Go over the ground poles at a trot, canter over the cavelletti and take the cross rail at the end. Canter a circle and begin the course. The jumps are #ed." I pointed out the course and then I said, "This one is simple. I'm sure you guys can do it without any mistakes. If you do, I will add a few turns & lead changes between the jumps. OK?" Hannah smiled eagerly. "Ok!" I stepped out of the way as Hannah nudged the Connermera with her heels. He sprang into a canter and she brought him down to a trot. They skimmed over the ground poles and cantered over the cavelletti. Then he popped over the cross rail and she swung him in a circle. They cantered to the 1st jump, an oxer. Who Dunnit cleared the big jump easily (well, 3' is kinda big for ponies). Hannah gathered the reins and rose out of the saddle as he surged over the wall and the hedge. Then he cantered briskly to the board jump, cleared it, and bounded over the gate. It continued this way: Hannah riding expertly and Dunnit jumping the fences easily and happily. After the course Hannah trotted back to me with a pleased smile. "Very nice!" I said. "Walk him a bit." I cleared the warm up stuff, and raised the jumps to 3'-6". I replaced the simple board jump with a tricky diagonal and added a few turns, lead changes, bounces...Now the course looked challenging. I reviewed it with Hannah and patted Dun on the neck. "Ready?" "Yes," she said, eyes shining as she saw the course. She gathered up the reins and cantered a circle, then hit the first jump. The 1st 3 fences were easy and Dun cleared them without any problems. Then the 4th was a bounce. Dun stumbled as he landed. "Quick, bring him up!" I yelled. Hannah yanked his head up but his knee knocked the pole. "That's ok, head for the diagonal!" I called. Hannah pressed Dun to the diagonal. Naturally the pony headed for the lower end, but if he jumped there he's be stuck and have no where to go for the next fence. "MIDDLE!" I yelled. Hannah dug her left heel into his side and he jumped akwardly...but in the middle. Landing, he cantered swiftly to the 6th jump, a wall. Dun surged over it easily. He took the next few jumps and then there was the triple. "In, out, in, out..." I called. Dun bounded through without knocking a rail! After that course Hannah & Dun were both sweaty & exhilerated. "Very good, let's end with that," I said. "Next lesson will be dressage," I added. Hannah nodded and turned Dun to the barn.
