well

If u format the hard drive u will have to install the cd-rom drivers at the same time in dos..or u wont be able to install win98 off the cd

it doesnt have to be the specific driver for your specific cd-rom
any generic driver will get the job done

u also must install the mscd.exe file at the same time as the driver

u can download both onto a floppy useing any search engine to locate a download site

u seem to know your way around in dos mode so u should have no problem installing those

once the format and system (command) files are installed
reboot with the win98 cd loaded and run scandiak and the basic antivirus if u can

then install as normal

u can save an files u can onto floppies or zip drives if u can access them

if not youre stuffed im afraid

if the drives still stuffed after that then id get a new hard drive installed.....by a technician as the master drive
keep your current buggered hard drive as a slave

and try and salvage what u can from the damaged drive that way

but u risk bringing corupted files and data into a clean new hard drive that way
i wouldnt risk it unless theres something u just cant live without on the damaged drive

in any case its a very good idea to have a second hard drive as a back up

in a situation like this it might have saved your system...

ok?

im still wondering how u came to post here but oh well....

its a strange world
