Arnie Gelbart is president of Galafilm Inc., a Montreal-based independent film and television production company specializing in feature film &documentaries, and children's television drama.

Gelbart began his career in the mid 1960s working as an assistant director with Luis Buñuel on Le Charme discret de la bourgeoisie. He went on to serve as assistant director and associate producer on Sweet Movie, by filmmaker Dusan Makavejev, also co-writing Montenegro. Between 1984 and 1990, Gelbart co-founded and was president of Cleo 24 Inc. During that period, Cleo 24 produced several feature films, notably François Girard's Cargo, the television movie Manuel, Le Fils emprunté, as well as Vent de Galerne, a joint production with France. Gelbart has also written and co-written a dozen feature films such as the critically-acclaimed feature Claire... Cette nuit et demain and directed a number of dramas, documentaries and shorts.

Gelbart recently co-produced two critically-acclaimed feature films with Triptych Media. The Hanging Garden (1997) received the Air Canada People's Choice Award for most popular film at the Toronto International Film Festival, was nominated for eleven Genie Awards and won four. Lilies (1996) took home five Genie Awards in that year, including one for Best Canadian Feature Film.

Television dramas and series Gelbart has produced include the award-winning family drama L'Histoire de l'oie / A Tale of Teeka (1998). Teeka won the 1998 Banff Rockie Award for Best Children's Program at the prestigious Banff Television Festival, the 1999 Golden Spire Award at the International San Francisco Film Festival and the Telefilm Canada Award for Best Canadian English-language production. Its French counterpart, L'Histoire de l'oie won three 1998 Prix Geméaux, including Best Dramatic Program, and Best Director. Gelbart's latest children's project is the series The Worst Witch, a Canada/UK co-production with Global Arts Productions and HTV/United for YTV in Canada, ITV in the United Kingdom and HBO in the United States. It was nominated for Best Children's Program for the Royal Television Awards (UK), and is currently in production on its second season.

Since the founding of Galafilm in 1990, Gelbart has produced many documentary series including Americas 500 (1992) and the popular but controversial mini-series The Valour and the Horror (1991) both of which won Gemini awards for Best Canadian Documentary Series. Galafilm regularly produces programs for CBC, Radio Canada, TVOntario, History Television, Discovery Channel, A&E, PBS, Channel 4 in the United Kingdom and F2 and La Cinquieme in France.

Gelbart's latest documentary projects include the mini-series War of 1812, produced in association with PTV Productions for TV Ontario and The History Channel, A Coat of Many Countries, Polar Bear Safari and Murder and Mystery on the Vancouver Stock Exchange for the CBC, and The Viking Saga, co-produced with Agaton Films of Sweden for WGBH's NOVA.
