On the 1995 canadian Census Form there was a question
something like
What is your ethnic background/or nation of origin"?
then it gave the possible answers
white
black
oriental
aboriginal
east indian
other..
etc...

people were very pissed off at this question

a protest was organised where everyone was urged to choose
"other" and write in "canadian" =)

the government said this was illegal

but eventually said to ignore the question

most companys now market to specific ethnic groups and do huge amoints of marketing research to figure out
"what type of car will a young black couple buy as a first car etc,,"
there was a bit of a stink here regarding the 'toronto stars'
'new homes' section in the saturday paper.

people were noticing that in a section of the paper that was 20-30 pages of huge ads for new homes
in ads that had pics or drawings of people in them
u NEVER saw visible minoritys depicted...
i looked the next week and and out of 60-70 ads with people in them there was not a single person who wasnt white...
bizzare...

a real estate marketing person said 'off the record' that their research showed 'white' home buyers were turned off
ads that featured blacks because it indicated a crime ridden area....

he added that blacks would only be featured in low priced townhouse developments that were aimed primarily at minorities,,,

sometimes i think the world is mad

but the ads now feature token minorities at least...
