The state cannot prevent victims. Murder is illegal, but hundreds of people are murdered everyday around the world. I think suggesting that legalizing prostitution as a way of preventing victims is a very narrow view. You may decrease the severity of victimization in the people who wind up in prostitution while its an illegal occupation, but it could easily result in increased victimization for women who wouldn't necessarily cross that line in a system where prostitution is illegal, but may be swayed if its legal. I had several friends in high school who became prostitutes. But *early all*of my close girlfriend's growing up worked as strippers for atleast a few years once they turned 18. They didn't do it when they were minors because they weren't "legal". I probably would have stripped too if I had been less self conscious because it was acceptable in my peer group. And I'm not talking about marginalized kids. I went to one of the best highschools in my city. My school was the one that most of the university professors sent their kids to.It is an academic school, not vocational. It was in an upscale upper middle class neighbourhood. I didn't grow up with "poor" kids. My friends all had parents who were involved stay at home moms in families where we almost all had dads living with us. The peer group has a more powerful influence in adolescence than anything you can teach your child as a parent. If your daughter falls into a peer group where legalized prostitution is seen as a get rich quick scheme, then your personal view isn't going to amount to a hill of beans. If you are lucky, they'll get through that tumultuous period of their lives unscathed and they'll get a chance to come back to the values they grew up with. But the adolescent years can be very unpredictable.
