Subject: Pornography: Friend or Foe?

The discussion below about stripping, prostitution and such brought to my mind a topic that was quite heated in the feminist community a decade or so ago (and might be still, honestly -- I haven't been keeping intellectually au courant as much as I could, but I digress).

Anyway, the opposite sides of the argument (feminists all) were these:

- Antiporn: Pornography (and sex work) is *bad* for women in that it by promotes the image of women as sex objects and thus promotes everything from work-a-day sexism to rape. We should be working to eradicate all pornographic representations and to rescue the victims of the sex trade, all of whom are being harmed and should be removed from it.

- "Sex-positive": Pornography is *good* for women because it liberates women to experience their own sexuality. Sexism in current pornography reflects societal sexism, but is not the cause of it. We should be working to promote women-centered sexual representations (i.e., our own porn) and to protect women in the sex trade by permitting them to make the decision to be in it safely.

Obviously, there's plenty of middle ground (for example, believing that porn *is* bad but shouldn't be illegal).

What do *you* think?
