"As for $$$, I don't think spending $4000 to resurface hands is any more wasteful than spending $4000 on a cruise to Alaska. In either instance, it's spending money that could help a lot of other people meet basic needs on rather frivolous desires of one's own. Either it's OK to satisfy expensive whims or it isn't -- I don't think the nature of the whim particularly matters."

Well, I don't see a vacation as frivilous. Luxurious, yes, but I'm not suggesting we shun luxury.

I think it's the combination of the procedure itself and the cost that has me reeling. It seems so incredibly vain (who cares what your hands look like??? Your face, I get--people look at that.) But if it cost $50, I'd think, ah, go for it then.

There is just something incredibly distasteful to me about spending that kind of money on something so, so, so inconsequential.

A trip to Alaska is good for the soul. Making your hands look a little younger (truly, the difference I saw didn't overwhelm me) is bad for the soul, IMO. It's pandering to something dark inside of us.
