I have a friend who went to an alternative highschool, she majored in a non academic major...didn't help with learning to function in our day to day world :(

I think its possible to provide freedom in learning while providing the structure, however I don't believe its necessary for the schools to provide both.

Can you provide a link?

I agree, but I don't believe that this is solely the schools job.

Mastering the basics will give the individual choice :)

I think in alot of cases its difficult to even provide basics within schools, but I don't believe its the school structure that is so restrictive. I think parent involvement is a huge issue in the current system, people just do not have the time to devote even a small amount of time going into their kids schools and actively participating or even participating in home support of what is going on IN school. Take for example science fair projects, this is a huge deal in our school, parents must go thru "training" so that they do NOT complete the projects FOR their kids...lots of parents complain that this is a major time consumer, and will go to the training and yet when science fair day comes, still there is lots of parent completed projects. Teaching parents how to be supportive of what is going on in school is a major issue of education, but is frequently missed as non essential.
