Subject: Why the sudden push to get Saddam?

I haven't heard any of any reliable intelligence which links Saddam to Sept. 11th; the CIA itself denies such a link is credible at this time.

Those who'd have the US invade Iraq say that it's imperitive to assure that he loses the capability to acquire weapons of mass destruction (or that he may in fact already have such weapons--goody, let's test that theory out!) I share their concern as much as anyone, and would like nothing better than to see Saddam deposed (i.e., assassinated).

BUT... why now? Why the new urgency to go into Iraq? We knew Saddam was an enemy of the US before 9/11/01. We knew he was very much an enemy of Israel long before then. Whether he sponsored 9/11 or not (and there is no reason to think he did at this point), it has been 4 years since weapons inspectors left Iraq. The threat has presumably been increasing with every month gone by since.

Why not continue with the war on terrorism? Al Qaeda is far from dismantled, Afghanistan is far from stable or even free of terrorists. Israel's situation is in a most heightened state--we know that Sharon of all people will be willing to use nuclear force if the situation escalates with Iraq.

Virtually nobody else in the world is on board with the US. Virtually everyone lined up behind the US after 9/11. The fact that Bush can't count on support from some of the US's closest allies should be giving him pause for thought. The fact that one of his top cabinet leaders, and one with a great deal of military experience in the region has been against invading unilaterally should be giving him pause.

But...

There can be no doubt that the Bush administration now intends to invade Iraq soon, with or without the permission, blessing, or help of the UN.

Why?

Astrid
