I will agree with your last sentence. There is much greater complexity than "black and white." But I totally reject the idea that we are all pretty much the same now, just because we superficially shop at some of the same stores and whatnot. Perhaps in another couple hundred years your statement will be more accurate (though I hope not), but not today, no way.

I mean, for example, I used to live in one of the most diverse neighbourhoods in the world (in Jersey City, NJ); yet Dominicans saw themselves as completely different than Cubans, Mexicans, etc.--even though they would all be labelled "Hispanic" by some; and though they all spoke Spanish.
