Subject: Seven Years TV-Free

Hello. My husband and I are 6+ years without TV (since Jan 1, 1997). My family didn't have one until I was 10 so I missed the 70's and early 80's. My husband spent his time outside with his friends as well and rarly watched it when he was young. We bought a house together in Dec. 1996 and realized that money would be tight, so diners out and the cable bill ($55+) were out. We can now afford diners out and other things, but the cable line sits dormant on the pole.

We are amazed at the response we get when we tell people we don't have cable or watch the networks. Not even rabbit-ears. It goes something like this...a co-worker or new acquantence will say "Did you see the show/ad/game on TV..." We respond: I don't watch television. There is typically a slight pause then they say, "Neither do I really. I just watch Discovery or the History channel..." My husband and I figure for all the responses we got identical to that one, that no one watches anything but Dicovery and the History channel!! American Movie Classics comes in a distant third. We figure their response to our not watching is that the boob-tube is what it is - a mind-numbing, drool producing watse of human energy. And they feel embarrassed. Whatever.

The second thing that happens is they ask what we do instead of watching TV and then they ask if I own a television set. These are simply tools they use to wriggle out of the uncomfortable feeling of dealign with someone unlike them. We might as well be from Jupiter.

We recent decided to ban "Hollywood" and will not buy or rent movie-videos/dvds (We never went to the theater for movies anyway). We are seriously contemplating selling our TV, VCR, DVD and 200+ movie collection as well.

Any fellow TV-Free people out there want to share their adventures in this technicolor thing we call real life?
