Hi Jo,
I hope you don't mind me butting in on the "conversation" between you and Robin, but something in your post reminded me of I lecture I once heard and a pertinent bit of information that goes with what you are saying.

It comes from a very hip Catholic priest, believe it or not. He said that if he could recommend just one practice to help with everybody's spiritual growth, it would be to spend a certain amount of time every day alone and in silence. The kicker was he said that that was one thing almost everybody found nearly impossible to do, because, "no one likes being alone with someone they don't love." That gives one a lot to consider when they encounter those people who just HAVE to have some sort of noise distracting them, even when they are trying to sleep.

I have friends who sometimes try to leave the TV off for a night or two. They always turn it back on after a short time and always say some variation of, "I have to have the TV going, otherwise the house feels so empty and lonely."
It gives one pause...
