"what did they leave out" I think is an important thing to consider. The thing that bothers me about the corporate news in America is the obsession with being objective. What we end up with is a very watered down, limited, narrow, moderate perspective, and usually the same subject reported by every source, if the papers aren't literally all buying the same story from a larger company. This also hinges around the assumption that it's easy to tell where moderate really falls, while ignoring the fact that not everything is as simple as just Democrat or Republican to begin with. Politics in America are generally presented by the media as being one dimensional, just one line. Personally I think of politics as more of a sphere, with an infinite number of lines representing political ideas and there opposites.

Surprisingly I've gotten in the habit of checking out news at Yahoo, sometimes they'll have a couple articles that I think are important, and you can vote on how much you liked the article and you can see how other people voted. I've also found that free weekly papers (at least in my city) while being thin when it comes to actual substance, tend to have much more unique, original content.
