i agree with valerie, that could be your problem.

another thing is....are his hooves being cut too short?

i have been riding a neighbor's gelding lately and he stumbles alot also. when i first started riding him, it was bareback, then the other day i used a saddle. he stumbled both ways. when it would happen, i just made him go on. i have been keeping a close eye on his feet and they just don't look right to me, so i talked to my mom (who has a lot of horse sense), described his feet to her, and she felt that maybe he had been cut too short. so maybe your horse has tender feet, that don't bother him until he has the extra weight of you on him. just a thought!
