Subject: buying a new horse- what do i get?

I am a 21 year old college student and I have been wanting a horse for years. I finally have somewhere to keep one and someone to take care of it. I've only ridden a few times and I am very unfamiliar with anything having to do with horses. I have about $800 to spend on the actual purchase of the horse. What breed, age, sex, should I be looking for. Does having a foul change how a mare will ride(or anything else about her)? I ask this because I have looked at some broodmares to buy. Any advice answering these questions or others I may not have asked would be much appreciated. Thanks! Matt
