Subject: Arthritis in hips? Help!

Hi. I have a 12 yr old buckskin Quarter gelding. I have owned him only a few months. Really sweet. He is a bit "clicky" in his joints (arthritis?). On a couple of occasions, and it happened today, I went in his stall to tack him up and he was really, really still. Not moving around at all. I thought maybe he was tired from running around outside. Well, I took him out and tacked him up. We went into the arena, and I lunged him. When we were done lunging (just trotting), I walked him over to the one side of the arena and he walked really slow. Dragging his hind hooves and moving very slow in his hips. When he stood, he didn't move again. (In pain?) My friend and I examined him and didn't find any swelling, heat or "touchy spots" on any of his legs. He moved fine at the trot, not looking off or anything. I have been thinking about putting him on a joint supplement. Any thoughts on what this might be? Any thoughts on supplements? This is only the third horse I have owned and the others have been younger animals. I have no experience with this. Thanks in advance for your help....
