The snake in which you speak of in your dream is a representation of fear, your fear. The part in your dream where you didn't want to squish it represents your failure in making a desion due to fear. Fear of the outcome, or that it may be the wrong choice for all concerned. A long standing fear that you have had to deal with for some time now.
