In reply to: Helene 's message, "Tough trivia: Scott quiz!" on 12:00:11 01/01/02 Tue

Hope you all enjoyed thinking about Scott ;-)....here are the answers to the quiz!

1. How many times has Scott 'done' Elvis? Please elaborate.

a) “Gung Ho”. Scott jumped up on a small table in ‘Hunt’s’ apartment, asked 'the little lady' (his girlfriend) what song she wanted to hear and proceeded into an all too brief rendition of 'Heartbreak Hotel'.
b) QL – “Memphis Melody”. Pretty self explanatory, I hope .
c) “Men, Movies & Carol” - 'Jailhouse Rock'. IMHO, it's awfully hard to get a gyrating Scott out of one's mind .

Additional possibilities:
It was mentioned that Scott also did a bit of Elvis on the Mark & Brian show when they were on the set during the filming of 'Memphis Melody' (and played extras during a diner scene!). I admit that I have not had a chance to re-listen to a tape of the show, but it does ring a bell with me. Might be considered the same answer as 'b)', but very noteworthy, especially since he seems to have done a few lines from 'Teddy Bear' which he did NOT do on QL.

Also......very off the wall........one word: 'ba-bee' during "Come Play Wiz Me" from 'Anyone Can Whistle'. Sure sounded Elvis-like to me!!

2. Scott, Bernadette Peters and Angela Lansbury have shared a stage 3 times (performing together twice). Can you name them all (the third is a bit tricky)?

Most people knew that the three of them were in 'Anyone Can Whistle' together in 1995 as well as "The Kennedy Center Honors - Stephen Sondheim" in 1993. The tough one was the 1988 Tony Awards: AL introduced Scott and Alison Frasier when they did their segment on 'Romance/Romance' and BP (along with Joel Grey) announced the nominees (and eventual winner) in Scott's category, 'Best Actor in a Musical'.

As far as I am aware, each one had an additional 'share' with Scott (AL at the 1992 Golden Globes and BP at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards this year *she co-presented with Scott*) but not the three of them together.

3. What famous TV show did Scott audition for in the mid 80s and what gimmick did he use to enter the room?

SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE
In an effort to become a regular on SNL, Scott tied a rope around his waist and 'pulled' himself into the audition backwards. Unfortunately, as hard as he tried to group his talents together for them, he never made it on. Many of us would LOVE to remedy that situation by getting him on now as a host!

4. Re: 3 Guys Naked From the Waist Down,
a)Which role did he originally audition for?

Phil Kunin (aka ‘Angry Guy’)

b)What did he wear to the audition?

Red longjohns (so who's sitting on a pic of this *g*?)

c)What prop(s) did he bring with him?

Two rubber ducks which he proceeded to place on the piano before he sat down at it. He called them a 'par-a-dox'!

Jerry Colker, who authored the play as well as eventually taking on the mantle of Phil himself was so taken with Scott that even though he did not think Scott was right for 'Angry Guy', he rewrote Ted to better suit Scott and cast him as that.

5. Which play did Scott consider his 'waiter' job?

His very first professional job, "Shenandoah."

Whenever Scott was down on his luck, he would check out the audition notices around the country, find out where they were mounting a production of the show and get himself there on the theory that he had a good shot of landing a role. He was right and ended up playing various roles in the show (some rather large, btw) in 7 productions!

6. What TV show did Scott first appear on and what was his character's name?

His very first TV job was in March, 1978, playing 'John' in 'On Our Own', a series that filmed in NYC. If anyone has any video or pics of this, PLEASE let me know !! As many of you noted (see question 20), Dixie Carter, who later appeared with Scott in “Designing Women”, was one of the series' stars.

His second TV 'gig' was in April, 1983, on the daytime soap, 'Another World'. He played 'Quentin Mills' for 4+ eps. Scott has said that whenever he auditioned for a soap, he would invariably get a laugh even though the lines were serious .

7. Can you name all the times Scott has played the piano on TV? Guitar? Give it a shot!

(Note: if any have been left out, feel free to add!)

Guitar:
“QL” eps… "The Leap Home", "Glitter Rock", "Memphis Melody," and “Star Light, Star Bright” (he also picked one up in "Thou Shalt Not" but didn’t play it).
“Mr & Mrs Smith” eps… “The Poor Pitiful Put Upon Singer”
Also of note: “Papa’s Angels” although obviously a banjo, not a guitar!

Piano:
“QL” eps… "Blind Faith," "Catch a Falling Star," "Pool Hall Blues," "Miss Deep South," “The Play’s the Thing,” "Piano Man," and “Glitter Rock” (although technically ‘keyboards’, not piano).

“Eisenhower & Lutz” ep… “Play it Again, Bud”.
“Mr & Mrs. Smith eps”… “The Poor Pitiful Put Upon Singer” and “Sins of the Father”
“Men, Movies & Carol” Diner/MGM sketch
“Nowhere to Hide”

8. Most of us know that Scott met Krista during the run of 'Baker's Wife'. What show did they next do together?

They did not get together again professionally until “Niteclub Confidential”.

9. Soon after the run of QL, what hit Broadway show (first opening in LA before it landed in NY) did Scott audition for and get rejected (foolish people)?

“Sunset Boulevard” (it starred Glenn Close).

10. Name two gifts the cast/crew of QL gave him.

a) A beautiful black guitar that he played at the Wizards concert.
b) Rollerblades (he proceeded to ride around the soundstage on them during the filming of “The Wrong Stuff” even though he was only clad in his ‘diaper’)…anyone having pics of this is immediately requested to post !!
c) Softball equipment

11. Name three nicknames Scott had as a child.

Skunk
Streak
Grandpa
Scooter
The first three he mentioned on ‘The Arsenio Hall Show’, the last he mentioned during the filming of “Major League 3” when confronted with an extra of the same name!

12. Why did Scott give up playing football as a high school freshman? What other sports (name at least three) did he end up playing varsity?

In 9th grade, Scott was only 5’ 5” tall and 105 lbs. and the other players were MUCH bigger!
Among other things, he was involved with tennis, soccer, swimming and baseball.

13. Scott left Kansas U. to join the national tour of which show (although it ultimately fell through)?

"Godspell". However, Scott finally did have the opportunity to star as “Jesus” in the Equity Library Theatre revival of the play in NY in 1981.

14. When things are tough, most actors have a fall back job out of the business to earn some money. Scott never needed one (see #5). However, he did have two jobs out of show business before he landed in NY. Can you name them?

Before he left for NY in 1976, Scott saved up some money by working as a house painter as well as a loan officer for Household Finance.

15. Scott fractured his foot while filming QL.

a)How did he injure it?
Scott said that he fell down the stairs. A crew member said that they had snaked a lot of cable around the set and had warned everyone to be careful. Guess who tripped over it, anyway? However, another story which has also circulated claims that Scott was lowered too quickly off the cliff while filming and that the ‘stairs story’ came about to make the insurance company happier. Pick one!

b)What episode were they filming at the time?
“Runaway”

c) What did the crew constantly do to his crutches while he was performing a scene without them?

Shortened the ‘height’, of course !

As many of you noted, his ‘trip’ during “Future Boy” and the ‘shot in the leg’ during “Piano Man” were all done to help explain Scott’s limp. I’d also heard, but cannot verify, that Scott had to have painkillers pumped into his foot during the filming of the dance sequences of “Private Dancer” since the foot had not yet completely healed.

16. What are the only two commercials he's ever made?

Canada Dry (singing and dancing) “I’m making my move to Canada Dry...”
Folgers: “It’s decaffeinated and I’m still waking up?”

17. Scott only rarely guest starred on anyone else's TV show. Can you name two times when he did (not counting Murphy Brown)?

“On Our Own”, “My Sister Sam”, “Matlock (The Power Brokers)” and “Dream On (The Taking of Pablum 1, 2, 3)” -both 2 parters.
IMHO, ‘Dr. Ted’ was a recurring character, rather than a ‘guest’ on “Design Women” so I don’t think it fits the category (‘Peter’ in “MB” wouldn’t have counted either!)

18. Name at least two charities whose events Scott has appeared at.

Gay Men’s Health Crisis - "Anyone Can Whistle"
Arthur McCready Trust - “Love Letters”
Venture County AIDS - Auction
TJ Martel - Rock n Puck
TJ Martel -Pool/Billiards

(“The Importance of Being Wilde” and “You Gotta Have Friends” were benefits for his children’s schools, The Oak Grove School and Hamilton Academy. Can we consider them charities?)

Scott has also appeared at one organization’s Pet Day and a ‘fair’ against family abuse (remember him carrying a crying Wil in a backpack?) I’m sure there are quite a few others as well, but Scott rarely publicizes these activities unless there are tickets to be sold. If you know of any others, please feel free to add!

19. Scott and Jay (J.D. Schwartz, his publicist) go way back. When did they meet/what was Scott doing at the time?

They met in New York while Scott was doing “Three Guys Naked From the Waist Down”. Jay came to the show with friends who had touted it and Scott, met Scott afterwards and told him that he just knew that they would be working together some day!

20. Scott is well known for bringing people from one project to another e.g. Pat Richardson appeared in both 'Eisenhower & Lutz' and 'QL'. How many different people/projects can you name where that's happened? OR How many people can you name who’ve worked with Scott on more than one project?

Please note once again: I cannot claim that this list is complete. If you can think of any others, feel free to add!)
