The man in Maggie's prize winning photograph was Al when he was an MIA/POW.

The connection is that when Al taps his temple and tells Sam that, "I was free. Up here, I was always free," he was responding to Sam saying, "You could have been free."
Remember when Sam was showing him the radio and saying that the radio frequency was the same as it was on the radio in the bunker. It was Al who had to make the choice of whether to help Sam warn Tom and the squad about the ambush, or to get Sam to follow and rescue the POWs that the VC were moving...one of which was him.
