"Enterprise" Blasts Off

October 03, 2001

Spirits were high on the set of "Enterprise" last week as news spread of the show's incredible, out-of-this-world premiere. Debuting one week ago on UPN, the "Star Trek" prequel starring SCOTT BAKULA pulled in the second highest ratings ever for the Paramount network -- second only to the premiere of "Star Trek: Voyager" in 1995.

Taking place 150 years in the future and 100 years before Kirk, Spock, and the rest of the "Star Trek" gang, "Enterprise" follows the pioneering days of interstellar travel and the origin of the crew of the first incarnation of the starship Enterprise played by Bakula, JOLENE BLALOCK, JOHN BILLINGSLEY, CONNOR TRINNEER, ANTHONY MONTGOMERY, DOMINIC KEATING and LINDA PARK.

"I'm very happy, are you kidding me?" Bakula told ET's MARK STEINES. "I walked on the lot, and Steve, our security guy, said, 'Congratulations Scott!'" The former "Quantum Leap" star was overjoyed with the success of the show's debut, and a week after the big premiere screening on the Paramount lot, chose to lay low and watch the first airing of "Enterprise" at home with his family. Modest about the instant popularity of the show, he simply said, "You work hard, you do the stuff, and you hope somebody shows up to watch it."

Keating, who plays armory officer Lt. Malcolm Reed, said, "I was very excited and quite relieved to know that they like us. It's a good feeling. The mood on the set the next day was buoyant and bullish." Park, who plays communications officer and linguist Hoshi Sato, admitted, "I was trepidatious about what critics would have to say, and I was very happy (about what was) said about our show in The Hollywood Reporter and The New York Times." Montgomery, who plays space boomer Ensign Travis Mayweather, echoed everyone's sentiments: "I'm ecstatic, obviously, that we did as well as we did, but we've got to keep them coming back."

"Enterprise" can be seen Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET. on UPN.
