I've seen it a gazillion times and love it to death. The Battle of Wits is one of my all-time favorite scenes in any movie. As a side note, the movie is unusual in having a string of American actors doing convincing British accents. For many years, I thought Robin Wright was really a Brit. I agree with you about Elwes, Patinkin, and Shawn. They aren't known as great actors. They were absolutely perfect here, even though they didn't go on to greater things. Even Andre the Giant, who couldn't act and had an incomprehensible French accent and speech deficit, was charming in a way I can't quite put into words. Nowadays, they'd get a professional actor of normal height and use unconvincing camera tricks to make him look like a giant. Have you read the book? It's just as good as the film (some would say better, but there are good points to each).

The first time I saw it was on video in 1988, the night before Passover. I was eleven. I enjoyed the film, but my parents didn't think much of it; I think they got more into it later after seeing it more times and reading the book. I suppose the capybara scene is a bit weak, and the sound quality in the film is poor, making it hard to understand some of the dialogue, which is one of the reasons it gets better with repeat viewings.I've seen it a gazillion times and love it to death. William Goldman has given us at least three of cinema's most memorable torture scenes: the "Is it safe?" scene from Marathon Man, the Machine in Princess Bride, and the "hobbling" scene in Misery.
