These were grown adults, for goodness sake; only the stoners and the black kid might have come around more quickly." I don't know, I don't think he cheats here. Weren't all these people drawn to this apartment complex? Most were mid-level losers who dropped out of life and were looking for something. Ironically though, Knight drives home this factor through the critic (what is that actor's name? He's always solid) when Giamatti asked him "what's a guy like you doing in a dump like this?" If he really knew plots like he thought he would have said: "I represent the Jewish Critic who gets him comeuppance Karma-Style, nigga." "His introduction at the beginning felt like a bit of improbable, SNL-style humor. I realized he would probably have some importance later on, but the way they used him was just arbitrary, filling a slot in the plot." The odd thing is that the one-armed dude could have been so much more than the plot-hole filler. Why THE FUCK would somebody do that? Giamatti says he just wants to feel special. True, but I would have liked to have gotten to know him more but he was delegated to brief-glimpse, you better be paying attention, I'm M. Knight Shammylan and know you aren't but then when you watch my masterpiece again you'll notice him and then realize how brilliant I am. He's stale. "I have seen other movies handle the subject of cosmic coincidence more believably. Recently I saw an Israeli movie called "Ushpizin," which was a collaboration between religious and secular Jews. It allowed viewers to insert their own interpretations into the events. It was a contemporary religious fable, but without being dogmatic. Shyamalan's movies never have that double level; he always strives for one interpretation only, and it limits the possibilities as well as seeming unconvincing." This movie and your point are interesting. Personally, I believe I'd feel cheated by such a vague ending but I am a Catholic from the Reagan years--I need closure, and I need it in black-and-white. At any rate, my girl took me to a party with one of the doctors she works with. Very cool lady, nice spread, more than enough to eat AND DRINK!!! She was wearing the Pi symbol and I politely asked her about it but her initial reaction made me look guilty. I'm a mean-looking guy plus I was wearing a Notre Dame hat. She was drunk and after tucking it away, she walked over to me and whispered (loudly) in my ear--she was drunk--the correct Hebrew pronunciation. I said 'Pie.' Needless to say her's invoked alot more of the throat. All over her house were Buddhas and weird characters from the pages of Hinduism. Add to this that she was an open lesbian. But I wanted to talk to her about her beliefs without offending her. She had just gotten a Jack Russell Puppy. We talked a bit but she was clearly distant to me and I didn't want to push it. My question is: Are Orthodox Jews embarassed by Kabalah or is the Faith so strict that straying from it in the face of someone in the partial know (especially a Catholic or mainline Protestant) enough to send one to shamesville?
