Subject: Members of the blue board...

For members of the blue board with a sense of fairness, I have tried to reply to your discussion group about the "special place in hell" comments made by one of the group, but it appears your member is hiding behind the skirts of one of your moderators...I am not offended that you may not like or agree with me or my position, but do you really need to be protected from a second, and in this instance, experienced opinion? If your members have such classy statements to throw around...should I get to defend, or is it to much stress on you guys?? Here is my reply, I am sure the originator of the offending posts has already seen it...the rest of you are free to read if you want. My apologies to the yellow board in advance...I just hate BS spewn by hypocrites.

David

Tashi,

Why would good, ethical breeders be offended at your careless and uninformed remarks? Look at your post...I think when you open your mouth you forget to register what dribbles out...you said, “personally Jan, I like to think there is a special kind of hell awaiting folks who have made their $$ off from greyhound racing”...you failed to distinguish that your remarks were NOT aimed at those who you admit “take good care of ALL their dogs”. It appears it is hell for ALL of us. Mis-step, or talking trash? Poor form either way.

Now to the body of your post...The greyhound protection act? Is that the best you can do? You must assume the readers of this board (blue board) are idiots.

Does anybody really believe you can take a World Class athlete and lock him up in tight quarters, feed him bad food, give him no exercise, neglect his mental health, and then expect him to perform at a level competitive? Are you serious? You try that and you will lose a lot of races to me. So you do your research off a site designed to make racing look even worse than it is? Even your biased research shows that racing dogs are turned out up to four hours each day for exercise and play...now all you readers...especially those of you with busy lives and full time employment, kids, responsibilities, and the regular pace of everyday...do YOU get to spend four hours every day, without fail, seven days a week, 365 days a year with your Boerboel? Honestly?

Here is a short primer on Greyhounds not found on your biased site; Greyhounds were brought to Kansas and several other states during the great dust bowl days...one single purpose...catch and kill the Jack Rabbits that were stripping all vegetation from an already denuded landscape. A perfect solution, worked well. What to do with theses dogs when the problem was solved? Racing. The Racing Greyhound Hall of Fame, the National Greyhound Association, and the center of the U.S. racing Universe is Kansas...thanks to a terrible problem that found a perfect solution, a dog. Greyhound fanciers LOVED this dog that had literally saved the farm, crusty old men admitted rare affection and devotion to this remarkable breed...and they continued to breed and race this dog for sport...true sport in the form of coursing, for many years.

When I raced Greyhounds, I had a reliable market for inferior racing pups and retired dogs no longer able to compete..I live in Kansas, where a good fast dog is still NEEDED by some folks...I never had to send one to a rescue, I had people on a list wanting to BUY my culls (Tashi, you should understand, you bought one of my Boerboel culls).

Greyhounds are no longer bred by farmers...Greyhounds are now bred almost exclusively for the racing industry. Greyhounds have been reduced to cannon fodder for the mega gambling machine that exists in our society...people, “breeders” have seen opportunities to make money so they jump into the breed...they have no real need, they have no vast expanses of ground, and they have no love for the breed, and they have no plan for what to do with the excess or failed...they only seek fame and fortune. The same is happening to Boerboels. Boerboel, “the farmers big dog”, is no longer bred by farmers...people like you, with no real need for a farm dog, and no deep seated love for the special aspects inherent in farm dogs, and no real way to test them are substituting with weight pull and bite-work, and hoping to sell pups.
I will not argue that Greyhound Racing disposes of too many dogs, I will not argue that shelters harbor many poor dogs bred by people with no contingency plan...but you should meet the people who I know who have a real need and a great respect for this breed that saved the old family farm...see how they treat their dogs. And you would wish them to hell...you are all class.

David Harris
